Scientists may not know what causes trigger points or even exactly what they are, but one thing everyone can agree on is that trigger points hurt, and the solution is often trigger point massage.

Sometimes called myofascial trigger points, these small, sensitive areas are usually about the size of a penny but the zing they give to your muscles when you press on one feels a whole lot bigger. The pain may stay local right beneath the trigger point, or you may feel it elsewhere. For example, trigger points in the neck may hurt only on site, or they may refer pain up into the head, or down into the low back. They may even hurt in multiple places simultaneously.

Trigger points are not equal opportunity trouble-makers. They target certain areas of the body, the back in particular. Trigger points in the lower back, hips, shoulders and neck are the most common sites and, unsurprisingly, they are frequently the culprit of back and neck pain.

Trigger points are one of the key symptoms of fibromyalgia and people with fibromyalgia frequently experience trigger points in the same places on the body. In fact, trigger points are one of the diagnostic tests used to determine if a person has fibromyalgia, but trigger points can spring up due to many other reasons as well. Poor posture, overuse, injury, trauma and surgery are all potential sources of the problem. Trigger points can also sometimes mimic other issues, such as headaches, migraines, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, and arthritis.

Because trigger points can refer pain to other areas, rubbing the sore spot yourself may not help, but that doesn’t mean you’re stuck with back or neck pain. Myofascial release and trigger point massage are special types of bodywork that are particularly effective in relieving trigger points. By releasing the connective tissue (aka fascia) that surrounds the muscle, the trigger points can be disarmed.

Trigger point massage can alleviate or completely eliminate the knots in your muscles that are causing your pain. It is possible to feel a significant or total release of restricted muscles right away, and your pain may even disappear after a single treatment. Regular treatments can help manage stress and pain from chronic problems, including old injuries. The neuromuscular massage therapists and bodyworkers at the Back and Neck Relief Center are professionally trained in the technique of trigger point massage and myofascial release. We’re here to help.

Massage Revolution - Neck Pain

The expression ‘a pain in the neck’ exists for good reason. If you’ve never woken up with a stiff neck, you’re in the lucky minority. Neck pain can ruin your day and keep you from giving your all. If you suffer from chronic neck pain but don’t want to pop pain pills all the time, neuromuscular massage and bodywork may be the natural solution for you.

Why does your neck hurt after sleeping? Sometimes neck pains are simply the result of sleeping wrong. Your neck got twisted, there was a cold draught, or maybe you had to sleep in an unfamiliar bed, or perhaps you’ve been experiencing extra stress lately. Maybe all you need is a good night’s sleep and the pain disappears. But if that’s the case, you probably aren’t reading this article.

Neck pain can make it hard to concentrate on other things like work or enjoying time with your family and friends. So if you’ve switched up your pillow and the position you sleep in, made changes to your diet and tried going to bed early, and still your neck hurts, give us a call. Our neuromuscular massage therapists in Los Angeles can help.

Studies show that sleep position isn’t always the cause of muscle pain in the neck. It is sometimes the type of sleep. People who have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, wake too early or don’t find sleep to be restorative are far more likely to feel pain than those who get good-quality sleep. This loss of sleep can disrupt the healing cycle that normally takes place while you are asleep. Worse, the pain might be the reason you’re waking up, contributing to the vicious cycle.

Neuromuscular massage therapy and bodywork can help break that cycle by relaxing the muscles of the neck and restoring them to their correct position.

Note: In certain situations, neck pain can indicate a more serious problem. If the pain persists, it could be due to arthritis, worn joints, or an injury such as whiplash. If the pain is severe or if your neck is twisting to one side, you may have acute torticollis. This condition can be due to a number of factors including infection, and medical intervention may be required. Our chiropractic doctors will evaluate your individual situation and find the right course of treatment for you. Contact us!

Expectant mothers can take proactive measures to positively effect changes in their body during pregnancy. Hormonal, physical, and mental challenges related to pregnancy can seriously and negatively affect mood and stress. A safe way to relieve anxiety and tense muscles is via Prenatal Massage.

Carrying a child shifts the mom-to-be’s center of her gravity. This puts a great deal of stress on the back, neck, abdominal muscles and shoulders. Pelvic joints become less stable because the ligaments tend to relax during pregnancy. The additional weight tends to ache the lower back.

Prenatal Massage Los Angeles can address these discomforts. Our Therapeutic Massage for Pregnant Women will help her relaxed both physically and mentally as this muscle manipulation can help improve mood and lower stress levels. It can also aid in reducing prenatal depression and anxiety. Ultimately, prenatal massage can improve labor outcomes for both mother and child.

I was so excited to get to talk with comedienne Paula Poundstone on her podcast about the benefits of deep tissue and neuromuscular massage and bodywork. Paula is extraordinarily funny, and although we laughed our way through the interview, she was able to articulate a lot of fears that keep people from trying bodywork (including a very specific one involving a long metal pole with a hook on the end), even when they’re in pain.

Rational fear of metal hooks aside, Paula pointed out another thing many people are afraid of: being judged. Our therapists are trained professionals. We are looking at your muscles and body alignment, not thinking that you need to drop a few pounds.

Paula also mentioned the fear of letting one rip in front of the massage therapist. Once again, as professional neuromuscular massage therapists and bodyworkers, we know this is normal, even a good thing! Passing gas, rumbling stomachs, moaning and other sounds (so ably recreated by Paula), they’re all signs that the bodywork is working! Once again, we are here to help, not to judge.

Surprisingly, outspoken Paula admitted she is afraid to say if the pressure is too much and hurts. It is very important to let your therapist know if he or she has crossed your pain threshold.  Healing occurs at the Hedonic level, the place where it ‘hurts so good.’ We are always willing to back off and do not subscribe to the ‘no pain, no gain’ theory.

Another concern that was mentioned was that some places Paula had been to seemed to offer a bunch of ‘woo-woo’ hokum and quackery, like balancing an avocado seed on your back. She wanted to know how much of massage is based on belief versus scientific evidence. This is where we feel our neuromuscular massage  and trigger point massage therapists really stand out. At Massage Revolution’s Back & Neck Relief Center, we pride ourselves on being the leader in the nation for evidence-based bodywork. We want to help as many people as we can live healthier, pain-free lives without having to resort to surgery or pharmaceuticals.

As is the case with all things, different strokes for different folks and if you’re just looking to relax, a Swedish massage will probably be more your speed. But if you suffer from chronic pain, if you have trouble sleeping or if your pain interferes with everyday activities, neuromuscular massage, trigger point massage, advanced deep tissue and bodywork may be the answer for you.

* Important note: For those who listened to the podcast, you will be happy to know that the Butterfinger taste-test had no lasting effect on my ability to use adjectives.

Migraine is a common type of headache that affects many people. It is characterized by recurrent moderate to severe pain which affects one-half of the head. Patient may also experience sensitivity to light, smells, or sounds, eye pain, and sometimes nausea and vomiting. There are oral medications that offer temporary pain relief but not often a path to eliminating the condition.

At Massage Revolution Back & Neck Relief Center, migraine treatment services offer a proven path to addressing the root cause of your migraine problem. The treatment is delivered naturally without need for medications.

Our massage specialists employ natural remedies for migraines through a process called Neuromuscular Massage Therapy. Migraines are caused by deeply rooted tight muscles in numerous parts of the body. Knotted muscles in the shoulders (particularly the upper trapezius muscles) can cause constant migraines and headaches. They can also develop trigger points that cause pain in other parts of the body as well. Poor posture can be a contributing factor. When the neck and shoulders are out of alignment, it leads to injury and inflammation. Migraines are triggered by neck inflammation as well.

Neuromuscular massage techniques applies slow and targeted pressure over trigger points. It will help correct your migraine issues. This treatment can also help restore range of motion, eliminate pain, and improve posture. Relaxed muscles and good posture can address chronic migraine issues completely.

Do you get frequent headaches or migraines? Do you wake up in the morning with neck pain after sleeping? Do you have pain in the front of the neck? If you answered ‘yes’ to any or all of these questions, Massage Revolution here in Manhattan Beach can help clarify many of the common causes of headaches.

Headaches may seem like a minor complaint, but they cost big in terms of dollars and lost productivity. How many days of work do you think people lose, collectively, due to headaches each year, just in the US? A hundred? A thousand? A hundred thousand? Try 157 million. (Yes, there really are people who track this sort of info.) Want to take a guess at how much that adds up to in terms of absenteeism and medical bills? We’ll just tell you: around $50 billion.

It’s estimated that for around 20% of patients who suffer from chronic headaches, their pain starts in the neck. Tight muscles in the neck are also a common cause of migraine headaches. If you suffer from regular headaches, you probably don’t want to be popping pills all the time, and that’s where we come in. Neuromuscular and trigger point massage therapy is the most effective manual treatment for neck muscle pain and headaches.

Trigger points (sore spots that may radiate pain elsewhere) are common with chronic pain and the causes of migraine headaches quite often. Typically, the trigger points for neck pain are found in the neck itself, and also the upper back. Our specially-trained advanced neuromuscular massage therapists determine where the trigger points are located, as well as where best to apply treatment in order to restore your muscles to their normal, relaxed, pain-free state.

Like many (if not most) complementary and alternative therapies, massage often gets treated like the red-headed stepchild when it comes to serious research. But there are new studies that prove that patients who suffer from neck pain have more pain-free days with high quality evidenced-based neuromuscular trigger point massage and bodywork than those who do not use massage therapy.

The results of these studies help everyone — patients and practitioners — to find the best treatment for optimum results for the most common causes of headaches. While these guidelines are helpful, we custom-tailor the session to your individual needs. Contact us!

Massage Revolution - Treatment for Back Pains

Think surgery is the answer for chronic low back pain? Think again. High quality, advance massage therapy and bodywork is where it’s at. No knives, no drugs; just effective, natural evidence-based pain relief.

Back pains are the number one cause of disability around the world, preventing many people from being able to work, not to mention play. Just about everyone will experience back pains at some point or other, but when it interferes with work and everyday activities, it’s time to take action.

You may experience pain in your lower, middle or upper back, on the left or right side only, or maybe you feel it all over. Because of the way the muscles run, lower back pain can even extend up into the back of the head. Any which way you feel it, neuromuscular trigger point massage therapy and advanced deep tissue massage can help give you lasting relief.

Our therapists take a personalized approach to each individual case. Your particular issue may need neuromuscular and trigger point therapy, as well as stretches, exercises and other recommendations or ‘homework’ for you to do to keep your back feeling good. Here’s why. When a person hurts his or her back, the muscles that run along the spine close to the surface often tighten up to protect the area from further injury, leading to lower or upper back muscle pain.

While this may protect your back in the short-term, it isn’t great over the long-term, and this type of restriction often leads to further injury and pain in the back, and even in other parts of the body. Another thing that happens when these superficial muscles tighten is that the deeper ones weaken, which only increases the risk of further back injury.

Due to the complexity of back problems, the neuromuscular massage therapist must be able work on multiple layers, but our specially-trained therapists are up to the task. Using neuromuscular massage therapy, we release tight spots and painful trigger points, restoring muscles to their proper length. This in turn corrects your posture and releases muscles from painful spasms and trigger points. Once the superficial muscles are released, you can strengthen the deeper ones. In time, they will return to their normal, strong, healthy condition and your body will work better than ever. Even that pain in lower left side of back will disappear.

But don’t just take our word for it; listen to the Canadians. You know how no-nonsense those Canadians can be about back pain. Seriously though, research proves the multi-prong approach to be true. Just last year, in 2018, the Canadian Therapeutic Guideline Initiative wrote, “A multimodal approach including MT (manual therapy), other commonly used active interventions, self-management, advice, and exercise is an effective treatment strategy for acute and chronic back pain.”

Massage Revolution - Back Pains

The pain in the lower left side of your back has you down, and you’ve missed work again. It seems every day you deal with some level of aching, soreness, and decreased range of motion. But today it’s excruciating. As you pick up your phone you think, “I should have made an appointment for a neuromuscular trigger point massage a long time ago.”

Back pains are the cause of at least 264 million missed days of work per year. Non-specific low back pain (nsLBP) is one of the most common – and costly – healthcare issues today. It’s the leading cause of absences from work and the main cause of activity limitation, not only in the US but around the world.

So, you’re far from alone. When it comes to pain, many people don’t seek out a healthcare specialist until it becomes unbearable – even if the pain is an ongoing problem. This is where maintenance care fits in.

If you have chronic pain– including upper back muscle pain – maintenance care may be just what you need. A neuromuscular therapist performs advanced bodywork, including trigger-point massage and deep tissue massage. The muscle release from this work provides relief from the pain. When this is done regularly (perhaps once every four to six weeks), the relief lasts longer and longer.

If you want to reduce your back pain and improve your range of movement, getting regular neuromuscular trigger point massage may reduce your current pain and lower your risk of future back pain. It can also minimize the severity of your pain if you do experience it in the future.

Recent studies say that maintenance care helps reduce the risk of future issues, such as upper back muscle pain, lower back pain, and general back pain. A study published last year found that people who received ongoing maintenance care rather than on an as-needed basis experienced nearly 13 fewer days suffering with nsLBP during the following year.

Managing your pain doesn’t have to be a singular effort. Between you and your neuromuscular therapist, you can minimize your discomfort.

Neuromuscular therapists recommend you do the following to help alleviate your back pain:

  • Develop a fitness routine
  • Performing specific exercises suggested by your neuromuscular therapist
  • Self-treating trigger points
  • Regular neuromuscular deep tissue massage (maintenance care)

The 5 Step Secret to End Back Pain NaturallyDid you know massage therapy is rapidly rising as an alternative to surgery for numerous painful ailments to include severe muscle pain? Painful muscle “trigger points” are activated when a muscle is overused or traumatized. The resulting inflammation from muscle overuse or trauma causes pain within the affected muscle. Trigger point pain periodically is miscommunicated by the brain and erroneously assigned to another site of the body. In some cases, trigger point pain can only be correctly isolated by specialists like massage professionals.

Trigger point therapy performed by trained massage therapists is the current rave within the pain management industry. This type of remedial massage directly put pressure to targeted points on tender muscle tissue. Often compromised muscles are weaker and cannot extend to their full range of motion, therefore, other muscles are compelled to action. Muscles compelled to perform tasks they normally do not accomplish can compound pain by creating new trigger points themselves. By applying direct pressure to trigger points through trigger point massage, you are promoting sufficient blood circulation to the area and flushing away toxins. The trick is always to accurately define the precise location of the trigger points and to apply the correct level and type of massage pressure to the same.

At Massage Revolution here in Los Angeles, on a daily basis we treat patients with severe muscle pain. Although treatment varies from patient to patient, we are proud to produce realized pain relief in as little as a single treatment.

Deep muscle tissue can become stiff and painful when you move your body incorrectly, when it is repeatedly stretched, has trigger points, or used repetitively in exercise or sports. Essentially, when this happens stiffness and trigger points can restrict range of motion because of the pain that results when you try to move it. This pain is a result of muscle knots called trigger points and scar tissue that occurs when the muscle is overly strained.

Deep tissue sport massage can help relieve this pain and stiffness. This specialized therapy is applied to athletes and sports enthusiasts who commonly experience deep muscle tissue stiffness from practicing and performing the same sport or exercise regularly. Deep tissue sport massage therapy helps release muscle knots and scar tissue. Slowly, it stretches muscles to increase range of motion and flushes away lymphatic toxins. This will help hasten the healing process of strained muscles, trigger points, and correct muscle imbalances.

Delayed onset muscle soreness is expected after deep tissue sport massage therapy. This is due to muscular micro-tears that occurs within the fascia. Patients are shown how to perform light stretches to prevent the muscles from healing in a shortened state and rather, to regain their full health with better range of motion and muscular contraction.
